The proposal to close 1,200 stores is a result of Walgreens’ recent financial difficulties, as roughly 25% of its locations are losing money. Tim Wentworth, the CEO of Walgreens, stated that the business wants to close stores that are either near another Walgreens shop or are having financial difficulties. The epidemic has also contributed to an increase in retail thievery, while Walgreens acknowledges that theft isn’t the only cause of their problems.

One Henderson Walgreens Location Set to Close Amid Nationwide Closures

Walgreens’ profitability has been damaged in recent years by competition from big-box retailers like Walmart and Costco as well as online retailers like Amazon, particularly in the selling of common household products. The decision to shrink was made because Walgreens and other similar medicine stores have finding it more difficult to sustain foot traffic as more customers buy products online. On December 15, 2024, the Walgreens located at 2015 Covert Avenue in Evansville formally closed. More cuts have been made over the bridge.
