White Christmas?

Here in Southern Indiana, we experienced a cold snap and some snow earlier this year. Although I generally dislike cold weather, I couldn’t help but believe that, given the recent extreme weather patterns, this year might be the year of a white Christmas!

What’s the December Weather Usually Like in Indiana and Kentucky?

Since December is usually not cold enough for snow to persist, I looked up the typical temperatures in Kentucky and Indiana. CurrentResults.com states that Indiana experiences highs of 36–44 degrees Fahrenheit and lows of 22–30 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s a little warmer in Kentucky, with highs of 44–51 degrees Fahrenheit and lows of 24–33 degrees. Although snow can occur when the temperature is 32 degrees Fahrenheit or lower, it normally melts fast in these areas, even if it does fall in December.

2022 Was an Exception

Some exceptions have been made, though, such as in 2022, when an Arctic blast struck the tri-state late on December 23. In just eighteen hours, temperatures fell from the mid-30s to below zero, a plunge of more than thirty degrees. This flash freeze, which was accompanied by heavy snow, left many houses and businesses in a difficult situation on Christmas Day due to a flurry of burst pipes. My spouse was sent out for several crises that day, I remember.

Christmas Weather in Indiana & Kentucky in 2024

What might we expect on Christmas Day and Eve in 2024? According to the prediction, temperatures will be higher than usual. Although usual will vary depending on where you are in the area, it is unlikely to be chilly enough to see a lot of snow. However, if I’ve learned anything about tri-state weather, it’s to be prepared for everything. We were expecting temperatures in the 99s during the fair only last year, but instead we had lovely weather in the low 80s. On parade day, the temperature rose to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, which was ideal for celebration during a cold snap with days that were barely in the 20s.

There will be a lot of rain and temperatures in the 50s and 60s, according to some forecasters. In a Facebook post, Ohio Valley Weather Watch’s Brandon F. stated:

Today, the Indianapolis NWS posted this:

We aren’t trying to be a Grinch, but those looking for snow on Christmas Day will be disappointed with rain chances and temperatures in the 40s expected. In fact, we’ve only had 3 white Christmases over the last 15 years: 2010, 2017 and 2022.

So, if you re dreaming of a white Christmas, don t give up hope just yet. Around here, anything s possible when it comes to the weather!
