What was “A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock N Roll?” by Donnie and Marie Osmond? That’s how I feel about entertainment, sort of. I prefer new technologies, such as music, movie, and television streaming services. However, I continue to be a huge fan of CDs, DVDs, and vinyl albums.

I purchase tangible goods from local record stores. I would still visit any nearby video rental locations if they were available. Reading the liner notes, examining the covers, and physically viewing the media products all have a certain effect.
When the remaining Family Video stores in the Rockford region closed, I was saddened. I then began to use the Redbox vending machines. When I was in the store, it was affordable and easy to get a movie. I finally quit renting movies and started watching what was available as streaming services gained popularity.
During COVID, I believe a lot of people stopped using the machines to rent movies. Regretfully, Redbox filed for bankruptcy and closed its doors earlier this year. I was informed that the corporation will be getting rid of the equipment and selling the DVDs for extremely low prices.
Unbelievably, Redbox vending machines are still in use in Rockford and throughout Illinois. This one was in front of the Walgreens at Charles and 20th Streets, and I just saw it. The “Barbie” movie was the most recent new release available, based on that machine.

It appears that Redbox hasn’t taken many of the vending machines out of places because doing so would be costly, complex, and quite heavy. Videos of people still using them have been posted on social media. Despite my temptation, I chose not to give it a try.
