George Strait’s Grandkids Watch Him Accept CMA Lifetime Award

During the ceremony on Wednesday night (November 20), George Strait was present to accept the CMA’s Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award.

The incident happened right after an all-star homage to him that ended with Chris Stapleton and the King of Country himself performing a duet.

However, it might be argued that the people onstage weren’t the night’s biggest stars.

The country legend addressed his family in the audience after Stapleton gave Strait his award. His wife Norma, son Bubba, daughter-in-law Tamara, and grandchildren George “Harvey” and Jillian Louise were all seated in the crowd.

Strait also thanked God, his fans, and the country music industry while performing live. He commended Stapleton, Parker McCollum, Jamey Johnson, Lainey Wilson, and Miranda Lambert for their contributions to his homage.

“I would want to express my gratitude to all of these amazing musicians who have covered some of my songs throughout the years. He joked, “I’m so glad I got ’em before you. It’s amazing to hear y’all do them.”

Erv Woolsey, his longtime manager, who passed away in March 2024, also received a mention.

Although Strait doesn’t often attend award events, this prize is a very unique honor. Only a small number of country legends have won since the award’s establishment in 2012, and the CMA does not present it annually.

“The Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award is intended to honor performers who have “attained the highest degree of recognition in country music,” the CMA said in a statement. Winners have gained not only fame within the genre but also outside of it for their music, humanitarian endeavors, and overall public persona.

Willie Nelson, the award’s star, took home the first prize in 2012. Since then, honorees have included musicians such as Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Alan Jackson, Loretta Lynn, and Charlie Pride.

At the 2024 CMA Awards, Strait was the focus of a tribute performance in addition to accepting the award and providing a speech.

ABC broadcast the CMAs live from Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. The show was co-hosted by Luke Bryan, Lainey Wilson, and Peyton Manning.
