At the 2024 CMA Awards, an all-star lineup of performers, including Jamey Johnson, will pay homage to George Strait.
At the Wednesday night (November 20) awards ceremony, Strait will receive the CMA’s Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. Some of its most ardent contemporary traditionalists pay homage to the country music icon.
Lainey Wilson, Parker McCollum, Chris Stapleton, and Miranda Lambert are also scheduled to perform. Just hours before the show on Wednesday, the CMA revealed the artists who were contributing to the moment.
Only a few days after being jailed in Tennessee on allegations of speeding and drug possession, Johnson will perform as a CMA.
On Sunday, November 17, Johnson was traveling north on I-65 when the event occurred. According to police reports, the trooper pulled him up for exceeding the speed limit of 70 mph. More than ten pre-rolled marijuana joints and “several” bags of marijuana were also discovered in the car, according to the trooper.

Johnson will be charged with a crime in connection with the incident. He was charged with possession of a Class E felony drug for “with intent to manufacture, deliver, or sell the controlled substance.” That crime carries a maximum fine of $5,000 or a maximum jail sentence of six years, according to TN.gov.
His court date is set on February 6.

Whether Strait will be present to get his Lifetime Achievement Award in person is yet unknown. Although the country legend rarely appears on awards shows, in the past, the winners of this coveted award have been present to accept their prize.
The Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award is not given out annually by the CMA. Icons like Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, and Kenny Rogers have already been granted this honor, which is only given to musicians who have achieved the greatest level of success and acclaim in their careers.
Strait’s most recent appearance on the CMA stage was with Alan Jackson in 2016. In 2014, he received his most recent nomination at the ceremony for Entertainer of the Year, an honor he has received three times in his career.
The 2024 CMA Awards will telecast on ABC at 8 PM ET will be held at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.The show will be co-hosted by Luke Bryan, Lainey Wilson, and Peyton Manning.
