Luke Bryan Wants CMA Awards Categories to Be Updated, and He Has Suggestions [Exclusive]

Taste of Country Nights met up with Luke Bryan as he prepares to host the 2024 CMA Awards alongside Lainey Wilson and Peyton Manning. They asked him what category, if any, he would add to the CMA Awards if the host had the opportunity to do so year.

He had a quite complex response, and he never shied away from a question.

“I think you should allow singers that are in groups to be up for Vocalist of the Year,” he states.

“When you look at aRonnie Dunnand aRandy Owen… some of the great singers of our time that never had the chance to win Male Vocalist [as members of groups].”

The singer of “Kick the Dust Up” had other ideas.

“Maybe like a Touring Artist of the Year, which is kind of like Entertainer of the Year,” says Bryan.

“I believe it would be advantageous to have a couple additional categories. The categories seem to have been created a very long time ago. I also believe that things have changed.

The 58th edition of the CMA Awards is expected to be a significant event. However, Bryan is correct that the only significant modification to the categories occurred in 2007, when the Horizon Award was changed to New Artist of the Year.

Though there have been similar name changes and other categories, such as Musical Event of the Year (which was separated from Vocal Duo of the Year) and others, there has never been a direct category addition. Maybe they’ll heed their host’s counsel?

ABC will broadcast the 2024 CMA Awards live on Wednesday, November 20, at 8:00 p.m. ET. Remember to return to TasteofCountry.com for real-time updates.
