John Dutton is still alive, and his death was merely a set-up for his most ferocious nemesis, according to the Yellowstone Conspiracy belief, which is too loud to ignore.
This is by no means the only unique interpretation of the Nov. 10 premiere of Season 5 Part 2.This alternate reality was explored in last Sunday’s (November 17) show. We’ll be talking about the following topics in our weekly Yellowstonepreview conversation later this week:
To tell the truth, I don’t believe John Dutton is still alive. I’m believing Kevin Costner when he says he didn’t show up to shoot any new scenes for these last episodes of the series. When speaking about his role, the actor wasn’t subtle or cheeky; instead, he stated unequivocally that he was no longer engaged with the project.
Even though we would all forgive him for that deception, it would still be a lie.
Fans have expressed their belief that John Dutton is alive on social media and in the comments section of our YouTube broadcasts on Yellowstone Breakdown. It was a minor but significant topic of discussion on this week’s Dutton Rules podcast.
One remark is provided here. If you are triggered by graphic (and inappropriate) depictions of suicide death, take care of yourself.
“John Dutton is still alive. Since he blew his brains out, it’s convenient that he allegedly can’t really identify the victim. It’s amazing! I’m eager to watch how this develops. John Dutton was aware of it, and Beth might have been as well, given that she was searching for the person’s name online and finding nothing else. It was staged.

The “Googling” alludes to a plot point in Season 5 Part 1 where Beth learns that her real identity is not Sarah Atwood. Since then, it has essentially fallen apart, turning into one of those annoying loose ends, a la the lug nut boy from the Season 3 finale.
A staged death is intriguing from a story perspective, if only because it acknowledges the several malevolent powers conspiring to eliminate the Dutton family. Beth, Rip, Kayce, and others would have more time to hunt down and murder the family’s adversaries as a result. The issue is that none of those three appear to be aware of the strategy.
The second issue is that Dutton may have staged his own death with police enforcement’s help. There would be police investigation into a string of killings that implicate Beth, Rip, or Kayce.
Nevertheless, this Reddit user presents a strong argument:
“All right, there’s a remote possibility that this is the largest fake play ever executed. “There was a conspiracy to kill you, so we’re going to tell everybody that you died in order to trap the would-be killers,” is one of the police and law enforcement tactics.
Before completely rejecting this notion, there is one last thing to think about. Why does Kevin Costner’s name appear first in the opening credits of Season 5 if John Dutton is dead and won’t be there? That idea is demonstrated right near the end of this week’s Yellowstone Breakdown.
You can find the Dutton Rules podcast at Taste of Country or any other place where excellent podcasts are available. On November 24, Yellowstone’s Season 5 Episode 11 will premiere on the Paramount Network.
