The company claims that Lou Groen, a Cincinnati, Ohio franchisee, invented the renowned fish sandwich in 1962. Groen saw a drop in sales on Fridays at his business, which was situated in an area that was primarily Roman Catholic. Groen persuaded McDonald’s to try a breaded whitefish sandwich in order to appease consumers who don’t eat meat on Fridays. It was the only non-hamburger option available at the time and the first addition to McDonald’s original menu. The price of the new item was only $0.29.

According to a Cincinnati Enquirer interview, there were other beefless options taken into consideration for a Friday mainstay besides the sandwich. Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonald’s, came up with the concept of the “Hula Burger,” which consisted of a pineapple slice served on a cold bun. The two sandwiches competed one Friday to determine which would be permanently added to the menu. It had to be changed, but the Filet-O-Fish prevailed. Halibut, which was pricey at the time, was used to make it initially. Groen so decided to serve Atlantic cod with a little cheese added.
