No One Was More Pumped for Cody Johnson’s Big CMA Win Than Jelly Roll

The “Dirt Cheap” singer may have been the second most happy performer in the room, but Cody Johnson took home the CMA Awards Album of the Year award on Wednesday night (November 20).

As if he had just scored the game-winning touchdown in the Super Bowl, Jelly Roll sprung from his chair and embraced his pal Johnson.

With the victory, Johnson receives his first CMA for Album of the Year. The album’s title is Leatheris. He defeated Jelly Roll’s Whitsitt Chapel, Chris Stapleton’s Higher, Luke Combs’ Fathers & Sons, and Acey Musgraves’ Deeper Well.

Johnson remarked, “I did not expect that,” upon his acceptance of the prize from presenters Katharine McPhee and Don Johnson. Then he handed his production crew the microphone.

“This is for this cowboy who’s been kickingShaboozey for a lot of years,” was one of Trent Willmon’s more bizarre remarks of the evening. Whether that was a jab at the performer of “A Bar Song” or merely a bad word choice was unclear.

Johnson consistently supplied both quantity and quality on Leather, and he consistently over-delivered on album tracklists. The singer quadrupled the number of tracks from the original release to twelve on the deluxe edition, which also featured his eagerly anticipated Carrie Underwood duet, “I’m Gonna Love You.”

The musician has had numerous nominations for the CMA Awards, including two victories in 2022 for Single of the Year and Music Video of the Year.

Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena hosted the 2024 CMA Awards. The show was co-hosted by Lainey Wilson, Luke Bryan, and Peyton Manning.
