Long Island Man Indicted for Alleged Ax Murder and Disposal of Woman’s Remains Across Patchogue

A man from Long Island was indicted for the alleged dismemberment of a woman and the subsequent disposal of the remains in three different locations in Patchogue.

Gary Cowell, 72, of Patchogue, was indicted for unlawful concealment of a human corpse and tampering with physical evidence on Monday, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney. Cowell is accused of dismembering the cadaver of a 56-year-old woman located in Patchogue.

“This defendant has been indicted on charges related to the alleged dismemberment of a deceased individual,” stated District Attorney Tierney. “I commend the Suffolk County Police detectives for their prompt identification of the victim’s remains.”

The investigation into the cause of death is ongoing. We wish to reassure the victim’s family and the public that we are dedicated to the pursuit of justice through the appropriate legal process. Law enforcement was informed on June 18, 2024, that a woman was missing and had not been seen since June 13, 2024, according to FOXNEWS.

Cowell, who was purportedly the last individual to witness the woman alive, was interviewed by detectives.

Cowell accompanied detectives who discovered the dismembered remains after the interview.

An axe that was purportedly used to dismember the victim, as well as other evidence, was purportedly recovered by detectives from Cowell’s Patchogue residence.

The medical examiner has not yet issued a cause of death, and the investigation is still ongoing.

Cowell is currently being detained on a $1 million cash bond and is scheduled to appear in court on July 25, 2024.
