Even though there isn’t a single snowflake in sight (as of this writing, here in Southern Indiana), the snowmobiling season in Indiana has officially begun. That’s alright, though, because there will probably be enough of snow to enjoy between now and March 31, 2025, as that is when the season ends.
Now is a good time to start organizing excursions to your preferred snowmobiling locations, as well as possibly some new ones this season. You may have a small snowmobile playground on land you or someone you know owns, but have you ever thought of creating some new trails?
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has compiled a list of the top snowmobile routes in the Hoosier state, along with all the rules, restrictions, and guidelines you should be aware of this season, in case you need some recommendations.
Unfortunately, most Indiana counties—almost all of Southwestern Indiana—do not permit the use of snowmobiles. There are almost 200 miles of snowmobiling routes in Northern Indiana, which is home to the few counties that permit it. The best trails to pick from are listed below, per the DNR.
Buffalo Run Snowmobile Trail
In St. Joseph County, close to South Bend and New Carlisle, Indiana, lies this 68-mile track. It is a component of the Indiana DNR’s State Snowmobile Trail Program. Take a look at this interactive Buffalo Run map.
Heritage Snowmobile Trail
Located in Hoagland, Indiana, this 34-mile trail is also a component of the Indiana DNR’s State Snowmobile Trail Program. Take a look at this interactive Heritage Trail map.
Miami Snowmobile Trail
Elkhart County, which includes Bristol, Goshen, Middlebury, and Millersburg, IN, is home to this 61-mile trail. The State Snowmobile Trail Program includes it. Take a look at this interactive Miami Trail map.
Salamonie Snowmobile Trail
This 40-mile loop route is situated in both Huntington and Wabash Counties on the DNR Salamonie Lake property. Take a look at this interactive Salamonie Trail map.
