In the history of the United States, presidential inaugurations have been a highly esteemed custom since George Washington was first sworn in. The ceremony’s purpose is straightforward: to ceremoniously hand over power to the newly elected politicians.
History of the Presidential Inauguration
On April 30, 1789, Washington, the nation’s first president, took the oath of office at Federal Hall in New York. Inaugural ceremonies have been held every four years since. Beginning in 1793, the early festivities were place on March 4 until 1937, when the first day of the new term, January 20, became the new date for Inauguration Day.
These inauguration ceremonies have grown increasingly complex over time. What began as a one-day, private affair held behind closed doors has evolved into a multi-day, public celebration featuring festivities.
Singers and artists have frequently been invited to participate in the celebrations, particularly during the several glitzy inauguration balls. Notable performers who have performed at these events include Toby Keith, Brooks & Dunn, Loretta Lynn, and Linda Rondstadt.
It appears to be a little more challenging, but not impossible, to get a spot at the actual inauguration ceremony. Traditional melodies like “My Country Tis of Thee” and “American the Beautiful,” along with our national anthem “The Star-Spangled Banner,” have been performed by a number of singers in recent years.
The 2025 Presidential Inauguration
Donald Trump’s second inauguration is scheduled for Monday, January 20.”America the Beautiful” will be sung by Carrie Underwood, while Lee Greenwood will perform his patriotic song, “God Bless the U.S.A.”
