A Warm Welcome: A New Ministry Center in Warrick Co. Offering a Warming Shelter and Recovery Support

Unpredictable December Weather in Southern Indiana

In Southern Indiana, the weather is always a little erratic. On Sunday, it was nearly sixty degrees; today, it is in the forties; and by the end of the week, we anticipate temperatures to fall below twenty. There are a lot of unexpected surprises in December!

A New Warming Center in Boonville

A Facebook post about a new warming center at the old Boonville Wesleyan Church caught my attention recently. I wanted to find out more and see if there was anything I could do to help or communicate about their needs because I’m constantly trying to keep up with what’s happening in my small community.

The Shucks Vision for a Mission Center

Bradley Shuck and his wife, Mary, relocated from Wheatcroft, Kentucky, to Boonville with the intention of reopening the church when it closed in April. But after giving it some thought, they decided that the building would be more useful as a full-fledged mission. In Warrick County, there is a great need for a facility that provides rehabilitation support in addition to assistance to those who are homeless.

They realized that those without electricity or a roof over their heads needed a warm, secure place to live as the weather grew colder. According to Pastor Brad, they are providing more than simply a shelter for the homeless to spend the night. In order to assist people in finding long-term homes, they seek to comprehend the reasons behind each person’s homelessness. The Impact Ministries staff was actually able to assist a family with young children in finding housing by Wednesday after they arrived earlier in the week.

Opening the Center Sooner Than Expected

Although the Shucks had originally intended to reopen the church in February, they decided to move the opening date to October after realizing how critical the situation was. Since then, they have been preparing the area for the community by completing repairs, overcoming challenges, and welcoming visitors.

What the Impact Ministries Offers

The warming center currently serves three meals a day in addition to snacks. They are currently installing a shower and have a hygiene shelf where visitors can retrieve necessities.

On top of that, there s a coffee bar, church services twice a week on Wednesday and Sunday, and several recovery classes to support people on their journey to stability.

I questioned Pastor Brad about their volunteer requirements. He told me there’s so much work to be done – from cleaning, to food service, to just sitting and talking with people, everything makes a difference.

Pastor Brad told me that he has been amazed to see the community step up there s so much heart and hard work going into making this mission a real resource for those in need. In fact, they are already thinking bigger and looking at more ways Impact Ministries can have an impact in Warrick County.
