Dangerously Low Wind Chills Expected in KY and IN

We experienced two major winter storms in the same week here in western Kentucky and southern Indiana. The area had a mix of snow and ice due to Winter Storm Blair. Another storm that dumped a lot of snow on the Ohio Valley added to the problems caused by the first one.

Fortunately, last Friday was a comparatively warm day. Rain and temperatures that surpassed 50 degrees were able to remove the majority of the remaining snow and ice. But Mother Nature has yet another surprise in store. Dangerously low Arctic temperatures were brought on by a cold front that passed through Saturday afternoon and evening. As a result, the National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for southern Indiana and western Kentucky.

WHAT DOES A COLD ADVISORY MEAN?

The advisory’s main worry is the possibility of extremely low wind chills.

How cold will it feel and get, then? With a breakdown of low temperatures and ensuing wind chills by city, the Paducah office of the National Weather Service described the potential outcomes. As you can see, many of us will be dealing with temperatures that feel like they are below zero degrees on Sunday night and Monday morning. It might feel like minus four in Owensboro. It can feel like minus six in Evansville. It will be a bone-chilling minus eight in Mount Carmel.

The National Weather Service office offered some heating safety advice along with predicted predictions. Many Kentuckians and Hoosiers turn to alternative sources of heat when it’s chilly outside, and some of these can be dangerous if not properly cared for and maintained.

There is some positive news ahead, even though it might not seem like it while your teeth are gnashing over the next few days. The temperature will rise into the 40s by Thursday, and there will be plenty of sunshine. What a wonderful thing! Believe me, we have earned it over the past few weeks.
