There was a time when calling a restaurant a “hole in the wall” would have been interpreted as offensive, but that is no longer the case. We can all probably agree that some of the greatest meals and dining experiences can be found at hidden eateries.
These eateries are beloved local secrets because of their charm, genuineness, and delectable flavors, despite their lack of ostentatious exteriors and national recognition. There must be a well-known hidden eatery in your community. Is it the best in Indiana, in your opinion?
What is Indiana’s Best Hole-in-the-Wall Restaurant?
The challenge of identifying each state’s top hidden restaurant fell to the people at LoveFood.com. The LoveFood team’s first-hand expertise, honors, accolades, and real user reviews served as the foundation for those selections. The selections are entirely subjective, which should be obvious (albeit I am repeating that).
Having said that, the OASIS DINER in Plainfield is the greatest hidden gem in Indiana!
The history of the Oasis cafe is quite fascinating. In 1954, the building that now serves as the cafe was transported to Plainfield by train after being manufactured in New Jersey. Before the Oasis Diner finally shuttered in 2008, there were a few owners throughout the ensuing decades. Fortunately, it wasn’t closed for very long. The Oasis Diner was eventually moved, refurbished, and reopened after being put on the list of the 10 Most Endangered Indiana Buildings by Indiana Landmarks in 2010!
The Oasis Diner is situated on the old National Road (Route 40), which is another interesting information about it. It is actually one of only five antique eateries still standing on US 40 between Cumberland, Maryland, and Vandalia, Illinois, and the only one on Indiana’s National Road.
Keep in mind that the Oasis Diner and other “hole in the wall” eateries give an experience rather than just a meal. Therefore, if you’re desiring something special, avoid the large chains and look for a modest location that will make an impression. Maybe you’ll find your new favorite spot.
