12-year-old Charged With First-degree Murder in Death of 8-year-old Cousin Over Iphone Dispute

In Humboldt, Tennessee, a 12-year-old girl was charged with first-degree murder after prosecutors claimed that she suffocated her 8-year-old cousin in a bunk bed they shared.

Ramaya Smith, the victim’s mother, disclosed to WREG, News 2’s sister station, that the dispute originated from an argument regarding an iPhone. Smith recalled her eight-year-old daughter as being content.

Smith stated to WREG, “I should have immediately gone to retrieve my child when they informed me of the situation.” “However, they were enjoying themselves during the summer, and I did not anticipate that she would harm my child.”

Demeria Hollingsworth, eight, and her cousin were residing with their grandmother in Humboldt County during the summer.

“She enjoyed reading books, swimming, and playing outside,” Smith stated. “Every day, she should ride her bicycle, engage in play with the children in her neighborhood, and interact with the children of my friends.” My infant was lovely.

A juvenile, who was identified as Hollingsworth’s cousin, was observed by District Attorney Frederick Agee to be smothering Hollingsworth with bedding, as evidenced by a home surveillance video. The video then demonstrated the 12-year-old’s efforts to clear up and reposition the body.

In part, Agee’s statement reads, “I regard this as one of the most distressing violent acts perpetrated by either an adult or juvenile that my office has prosecuted.”

It further stated that they are requesting that the juvenile magistrate try the suspect as an adult.

“The last time I saw my baby, she was smiling, giving me kisses, and informing me that she would see me when she returned home,” Smith stated. “She will never return home.” She will never return to her hometown.
