While some of this involved research, other parts of the “study” just needed me to recall earlier experiences. Specifically, one item on the list was going to see my childhood relatives in New Mexico.
I believe I can characterize the New Mexico dialect, however I’m not sure what to call it. It sounds to those of us in the South like a hybrid of a Hispanic and a northern accent. And that makes perfect sense, given that my cousins live only a few hundred miles from the Mexican border. In summary, they don’t have any sort of Southern accent.
The Kentucky Accent
When people see me, they are often surprised to learn that I don’t always have a Kentucky twang, which is a southern accent. They used to often compare our accents to those of Texas, which couldn’t be further from the truth.
The stereotype that all Kentuckians are barefoot has, I think, been debunked by most people. At the very least, that is absurd. However, I am aware of its origins because Kentucky was once thought to be a state full of “hillbillies.” Once more, it seems to me that ship has set sail.
